Outsiders Outdoor Lighting Exhibition At Timorous Beasties

Interior Lighting Design, dos and don'ts for homes February 14, 2019 10:26

This will be added to as time goes by and discoveries are made, but to start there are a few things that just make sense to me, so I would like to put them down...

DO have central pendant lighting as a feature. It doesn't have to be one completely central object in the room though, especially if there's a central high window next to it... you can have two pendants that fall either side of the window so that you don't block any beautiful views or cast shadows from that window during the day.

DO have lighting in or near all of the corners of your space... high and low so that they dance in the room. My preference is low lighting at the door as you enter, and high up at a far corner, -bringing your eyes and spirits up as you look further into the space.

DO have a way of switching all of the side lighting on at once so that they get used no matter how lazy you're feeling. Also so that they are simple to switch off when leaving. This could be a switch at the wall connected to the plug sockets, remote control for your lamps, a voice activated wifi system... there are even a few other more sophisticated integrated systems...

DON'T use very cold main lighting in a room unless you have a very specific cool look in mind and can stand the cool feel. 3000K or above is cold, and 2700K is a standard warmth, with 1800K being a very warm orange look ('vintage' or 'retro'are often used to describe this warm feel similar to that of a slow-burning fire). Cold lighting is good for working, or lighting outdoor spaces, even small details but feels unwelcoming, - it's cold! As an interesting side detail (lighting above and below kitchen cabinets, dappled feature on the ceiling, cluster of tiny droplets in a far corner) it can be very interesting. To me these bluey details seem to give the feel of snow at night or water, and that produces wonder, but I would never use it as the main lighting in a space. Use 3000K, 4000K and 5000K at edges or for small points of interest.

January January 5, 2019 10:55

OK sorted now after a big holiday. Always fills me with dread coming back into a cold studio to remember what was happening and what should be happening. But it was fine. It always is.

This week is all about making small interesting glass lighting orders up, getting final neatening up done in the hairdresser project (get those dangly cables OFF the ceiling... where's my filler gone?) and ordering more, more, MORE stock.

...and then it'll be the weekend again. Already.

Watch out, the holidays are coming December 7, 2018 10:06

It's been busy. I've been making bespoke orders, travelling about by plane and Sprinter, installing interesting lighting set ups and planning some more fun big ones for next year.

But on 20th it'll go quiet. There won't be anything sent out between 20th Dec and 7th Jan because that is strictly leave-the-couriers-alone-and-eat-mince-pies time. Maybe even a glass of port some Wham and some Twister.

The things we do November 21, 2018 08:35

A little bit of what and why.

One Foot Taller has been a design-and-make cottage industry since its creation in 1995. Designing for others also, but mostly producing our own simple and elegant products either 'in-cottage' or with local producers.

For 10 years we've focussed just on lighting, - simple and elegant lighting.

Simple because in my mind when a product is simple and elegant it has a strength and universal balance which is nourishing, a beauty that will seem 'right' for a century or more, a beauty we can count on.

Simple also in production because we're a tiny business focussed on local artisans and factories, working with the technology that's good for small batch production and bespoke pieces. Using tried and tested technology we try to ensure that these products will last a long, long time.

There is not a lot of fancy packaging. There is no flashy instruction magazine, you won't find a velvet cushion in the box with the product and there will be as little in there as possible, with as much being recycled as possible.

You will get fine lines with wholesome detailing and handmade elements, made locally to our bases in UK and France, you'll get a good chat by email or telephone from the designer if you have queries, some installation help in person if I'm in the area and a 10 year guarantee.

This is a personal design set up with a personal feel.

Introducing....... THE WALL July 25, 2018 18:50

Introducing THE WALL.
We now have a tidy studio and a clear wall to attach to, push things up against, photograph near to, test new products out on or in front of, have tea breaks near, stare at...
It may change colour, it may not, but the things against it will change with alarming regularity.
Today's WEDNESDAYWALL: the lights which were being explained at last week's talk, and the special Bells which are being packed up and sent to Lorna after a little test and clean.....

Friday's Exhibition install: De l'ombre à la Lumière July 14, 2018 23:56

Setting up the One Foot Taller exhibition at La Sellerie, Montrèjeau Office De Tourisme made for a van-packed fun-packed Friday. Thank goodness we were only given 3 hours to set up or I'd have taken 2 days measuring and remeasuring: Of COURSE I was having kittens, imagined it wasn't long enough. But oh yes, with JC and Q it was fast and funny! Up and down ladders... repositioning my cheeky measurements and shiny nuts... popped the last plug on with 10 minutes to spare... looks lovely, no bother! Even enough time for a Friday night drive-by shopping spree on the way to Sylvie's barbecue. Annnnnnnd relax.

Exhibition is now open and runs until 31st August 2018 at La Sellerie, Montréjeau Office de Tourisme, 6 Rue du Barry, 31210 Montréjeau, France. Tel 0033 (0)5 62 00 79 55.

Etheletta 6 Drop! Ya Beauty! June 12, 2018 13:19

Well, Etheletta 6 Drop is kind of like the Ethel 6 drop - which is a lovely, serene, wide cool calm thing and fills a large space in its floaty uplifting way... except that Etheletta is small enough to fit in a normal place! Hoo flipping rah. Rahhh! So, houses with beautiful stairwells and flats with lovely but modest mezzanine levels can use these relevant, graceful lighting suspensions without feeling like they're crowding the place. They last for ages, seem timeless enough not to go out of fashion, wash with a wipe or by being chucked in the bath, and bulb changing is easy as you like.

Watch out, I'm going to put more pics up on the listing showing interiors with Etheletta 6-Drops sooon...

One Foot Taller at Timorous Beasties Shed April 7, 2017 15:30

Glasgow. Timorous Beasties and One Foot Taller met in 1995 in Glasgow.  We've been friends and collaborated on various things over the years, even though I moved to France and have been running One Foot Taller from afar since 2007. I planned a March trip to Glasgow in order to do some work with the Glasgow School of Art, meet with designers clients and manufacturers in Scotland. So... we decided to get some of my work up with theirs in the new Timorous Beasties Shed space, - a beautiful and industrial showroom, big enough to celebrate the scale of their work. We chatted a little as they got the space together so it was lovely to see it in action at the end of my week there.
On a rainy Friday evening the other week people wandered in to see that TB wall-coverings and fantastic upholstered furniture were shown in full glory, illuminated here and there by One Foot Taller clusters of lamps and suspensions. A great night in the Shed and a lovely way to see the pieces complimenting each other. Sometimes intricate, sometimes bold and always impressively interesting, the surface patterns on show from Timorous Beasties provide a beautiful and rich environment for calm and elegant lighting to float within. It’s a joy, after all this time, to see our products working together as well as ever.

chatty chat chat April 21, 2016 12:04

Made To Last interview, here as WELL forgoodnessake... I know I know, but they're good folk, go and have a browse with all that wonderful spare time.

Katty Barac, one of the Founders of One Foot Taller talks about their approach to designing and making their stunning and unique range of Glaswegian polyethylene lights and lampshades.

What do you make and why?

Lighting furniture and home accessories…

Will and I started the business straight after graduating from Glasgow School of Art. We, along with our tiny group of product design class-mates formed a culture of care and equality as we wandered through our college days together. We all entered competitions in order to all fill a group fund, discussed environmental and social issues around technological and political developments happening at the time and ended up pretty close. We started the business in order to keep designing things we value, working how we want, caring and being cared for by suppliers customers and other designers. I don’t intend to stop, it’s very enjoyable.

We know your products are great, you know your products are great but how can they know?

They can tell by seeing the aesthetic combination of simplicity and elegance with a touch of the not so ordinary sneaking out. By knowing that the products are produced in solid little batches by small happy manufacturers and that there is as little packaging and transport used to ferry these blighters over to them as possible.

One Foot Taller Ethel Holey Lampshade
One Foot Taller Ethel Holey Lampshade – £114.60

Whereabouts does your manufacturing take place?

The polyethylene lamps and shades are produced by a small factory in Irvine, Scotland. They traditionally produce car parts and bins, but when we came up with an idea for risky production of a chair in 1998 (‘Chasm’) they were up for doing billions of prototypes with us. We’ve worked together and been friends ever since.

One Foot Taller Polly Floor Lamp
One Foot Taller Polly Floor Lamp – £114.60

What is the toughest part of the product development process for you?

New products using unfamiliar methods of production are always the most exciting to develop. The scary part is that they use production methods that I’m not familiar with and sometimes in ways that haven’t been tried before! All manner of things can go wrong while trying to work out how best to use a method of manufacture that is normally used in other ways… but that exploration-risk is the fun of creation. So yes, manufacturing mixing in with the design process is the hardest part of the equation.

One Foot Taller Polly Standard Lampshade
One Foot Taller Polly Standard Lampshade – £106.80

What is the most enjoyable part of the process of product development for you?

I love drawing by hand in pencil. Initial drawings are where you can question expectations try something unconventional and express yourself… Try to create a bit of beauty. This is always reined in by the practical limitations of a project, but those challenges, which are normally a little frustrating, bring super satisfaction when they’re overcome.

One Foot Taller Polly Inverse Black Shade
One Foot Taller Polly Inverse Black Shade – £106.80

Do you have any new products/ranges planned for the next year or so?

Yes. Glass products with a small hand-blowing glass company in Scotland. I’m very excited about visiting them for the first few tries…soon.

What products or people have helped to inspire you to create the products that you do?

Most friends are inspiring… through their actions and sentiment, down to their practical advice and feedback on prototypes! Some mentors have also given me superb advice over the years, from my mother Carol, to Norman McNally, to Deyan Sudjic to Ron Arad. They have inspired confidence and honesty as opposed to encouraging specific design or business directions.

One Foot Taller Cube Lamp Side Table

Tell us something about yourself that not many people know

I play a tiny bit of violin for a between-jobs-rest most days while working… that or I do some SANDING.

What do you wish we had asked you?

About my magic tricks…

MTL – What? We definitely need more information on that topic.

Which light or lampshade in your range do you personally use the most and why?

I have Ethel Lampshades (and the inverse version) all over the house as do most of our family and friends. They seem to go with everything and bring a little serenity to all of our lives.

One Foot Taller Ethel Inverse Lampshade
One Foot Taller Ethel Inverse Lampshade – £106.80

Why did you name your products as you have?

I like to name products in a way which either reflects their form, use, or helps to understand the way they’re made. Polyethylene is the material used to make the ‘Polly’ and the ‘Ethel’, and I think there’s always room to mention more female names in our lovely masculine world.

MTL – Thank you for your time Katty, it has been great to learn some more about you and your approach to design and manufacture.

Booared February 16, 2016 14:39

No no, not bored - just making boards. Have to stop once the snow's thick and the car's packed though... snowboards are even more fun than sanding boards.

Weighty waity cabinet. November 29, 2015 22:12

Oh it's been a journey, but the trophy cabinet for Bearsden Primary IS BEAUTIFUL.

Large and heavy in solid walnut with solid dimensions, careful craftsmanship producing fine detailing, rich resiny text and eco oiled silkiness. Thank you Simon and your silo design and build...

Mine landed in the deep shelf on the left... September 11, 2015 15:24

When you have to keep everyone's stuff off the floor, it really should be shelves: Make em solid, big enough, and make sure that they're all different sizes for organise-tastic pazazzzzzzzzzzzz… These ones are about to go in the bathroom and be covered in lotions, bubbles, ducks, towels and toilet paper. I'm tempted to just keep them in the bedroom for clothing target practice, - "where did your T-shirt land?"

No. That would be shelfish. This'll go in the projects ideas page, in oak and in larch...

Sandy September 7, 2015 10:46

Some people haven't sanded wood, seen that change and and smelt that smell. Try it. I'd better finish sandin.

Just minding my own business, hanging black lamps in a tree, in the middle of a storm...

Black because they're 100% recycled (that's the only colour easily achieved, Henry Ford would have approved). Good outdoors since the flotsam and jetsam out here is kinder to a black surface than to whitey-white ones, and you get cheeky, moody light, perfect for wild evenings outdoors.
