One Foot Taller is a lighting design shop run by Katty Barac, managing a fairly complex and flexible process. It involves much drawing, hand finishing and logistics by a few people, made more interesting and demanding by customised and bespoke commissions.
Katty designs the lighting (she graduated with BA Honours ProductDesign from Glasgow School of Art in 1994) and runs One Foot Taller.
It's great fun, hard work and takes many screwdrivers.
Small factories and workshops in UK make small batches of lights for OneFootTaller (normally up to 20 pieces at a time), hand finishing and packaging them in a cottage industry way as simply as possible to avoid wasted material.
Testing is done in the factories and in the studio.
Instructions are all written at OneFootTaller, whether for standard products or for special commission pieces.
Katty's studio in France is where most special commissions are made (by her and by colleagues), and then products are sent from the UK workshops or from Katty's studio direct to the delivery addresses. Tadaaa!
